Bristol Carpet Warehouse help and advice
Here at Bristol Carpet Warehouse, we believe that buying new
carpets and floor coverings should be an easy, stress free experience.
That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you measure your
rooms.
If you do get stuck though, please give our friendly team a
call on 01172035111 or email sales@bristolcarpetwarehouse.co.uk
How do I measure my rooms for carpet and vinyl?
You’ll need: Pen, paper, tape measure, calculator.
- Measure your room’s length and width. You need
to measure at the longest points, and don’t forget to include your doorways and
any alcoves or drop-backs. We work in Metres, so make sure you use the metres
and centimetres on your tape measure!
- Add 10cm to the length and the width of the
carpet, which allows for waste and materials which may be required for fitting.
A 2m x 3m room would require 2.1m x 3.1m of carpet.
- Select the appropriate width for your carpet on our website. Most carpets come in a 4m or a 5m width. Vinyl typically comes in a 2,3 or 4m roll width. Please contact us if you need assistance!
Notes: Striped carpets run along the length of the roll, not the width. Contact us to check your pattern repeats prior to ordering.
Measuring Stairs
- Count the number of straight, plain steps.
- Measure
the tread and the rise, if the step has a overhang or a nose, make sure you
account for this in your measurements. Add a small margin for tucking and
Multiply the total length required for one step by the number of straight
steps.
-
Measure the width of the widest step (it is
worth checking your steps are all the same!) and add a 10cm margin to this
measurement.
-
For winding stairs you need to measure the
longest point on each step and the width.
-
For bullnose areas and overhanging bottom steps,
please give us a call and we can talk you through measurements!
Notes: For striped carpets, you need to
take into account pattern repeat to ensure the stripes run properly down the
stairs. If you need any help, please contact us for advice.
Don’t forget if you are covering a landing
to take into account the top step in your overall measurements.
Irregular areas should be measured at their
widest points.
We don’t recommend fitting sheet vinyl on stairs. If you’d like a hard floor cover for your stairs, we recommend you get in touch with our sister company, Oak Flooring Direct. They are the experts in wood, laminate or luxury vinyl tiles!
